St John's Church What A Classic

St John's Church in Wolverhampton is a Grade II Listed church built between 1758-1766. Due to the Industrial Revolution around 1760, Wolverhampton's population had started to grow rapidly and with an increasing Church Of England congregation in the area a new place of worship was required to ease the pressure on St Peter's Church which had become the focal point of the parish, this as well as the already expanding following of other religions across the town ( Wolverhampton became a city in 2000) and the local countryside meant that the Church Of England needed a new place of prayer to attract this widening, religious audience and so a chapel was constructed, it is this chapel that became St John's Church, such was the population growth that St John's was unable to sustain the congregation and a further two churches were built, St Paul's and St George's, St. Paul's was unfortunately demolished in 1960 to make way for a ring road around the town centre, while St George's became part of a local Sainsbury's superstore in the 1980's, which has since moved to Chapel Ash leaving the church empty.

It's Time For Some Religion

St John's Church was designed by either  the architect William Baker or the builder Roger Eykyn in the classical style it features large rounded windows edged by prominent keystones, a parapet running along the edge of the roofline, adorned with attractive balusters, a clock tower featuring pilasters and urns and is topped by a tall, octagonal spire. The interior of the church features a vaulted ceiling (a roof supported by internal walls and arches) supported by decorative columns and first floor bays overlooking the central nave (central part of a church) the chancel (the area close to the altar reserved for the clergy and choir) is panelled and features pilasters, swags and a large central pointed pediment.

The church is located in it's own square and indeed is also called St John's Church In The Square with the church and it's grounds surrounded by cobbled streets, these streets form St John's Square. The gates and piers (posts) are listed, there is a former convent in one corner of the square, which today is home to Carmelite Nuns (a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church) and lining George Street which leads to the square are rows of Grade II Listed buildings. All in all a pleasant part of Wolverhampton City Centre.
